An opportunity can be exciting precisely because it is incomplete. You may see what it could become before you understand what it will demand. This seven-card spread examines both promise and structure: why the opportunity attracts you, what is being offered, what remains unclear, and whether accepting would align with the direction you want to build.
Potential becomes useful when you understand the terms, resources, responsibilities, and tradeoffs required to develop it.
The Spread at a Glance
- Why This Opportunity Attracts Me — This card reveals the need or desire being activated: growth, recognition, money, freedom, creativity, security, belonging, or escape.
- What It Genuinely Offers — Identify the concrete benefit available under present terms rather than the most optimistic future version.
- What It Will Demand — This position names the workload, learning, compromise, visibility, relocation, responsibility, or emotional energy required.
- What Remains Unclear — Look for missing information, vague expectations, timing, another person’s authority, or an assumption that should be investigated.
- The Risk to Consider — Every opportunity carries exposure.
- The Support Available — This card shows the skill, mentor, resource, savings, community, experience, or negotiating power that can help you succeed.
- The Direction Acceptance Creates — Read the path that opens if you accept with full awareness of the preceding cards.
Before You Shuffle
Define the opportunity and any decision deadline. Ask: “What do I need to understand before accepting or declining this opportunity?” Gather contracts, compensation, expectations, and other factual information separately from the reading.
How to Lay Out the Cards
Place card one at the top center. Create a middle row with cards two through four, then a lower row with cards five through seven. The layout moves from attraction into offer, demands, uncertainty, risk, support, and direction.

Card 1: Why This Opportunity Attracts Me
This card reveals the need or desire being activated: growth, recognition, money, freedom, creativity, security, belonging, or escape.
Card 2: What It Genuinely Offers
Identify the concrete benefit available under present terms rather than the most optimistic future version.
Card 3: What It Will Demand
This position names the workload, learning, compromise, visibility, relocation, responsibility, or emotional energy required.
Card 4: What Remains Unclear
Look for missing information, vague expectations, timing, another person’s authority, or an assumption that should be investigated.
Card 5: The Risk to Consider
Every opportunity carries exposure. Name the financial, relational, reputational, emotional, or opportunity cost without treating risk as automatic refusal.
Card 6: The Support Available
This card shows the skill, mentor, resource, savings, community, experience, or negotiating power that can help you succeed.
Card 7: The Direction Acceptance Creates
Read the path that opens if you accept with full awareness of the preceding cards. Consider whether that direction supports your longer-term values.
How to Read the Story
Cards two and three reveal the exchange; card four tells you what must be clarified before consent is informed. Weigh the risk in card five against both support and direction, not excitement alone. If card seven is promising but card four remains serious, the next step may be negotiation or investigation rather than immediate acceptance.
